Knitting needles
Knitting is a wonderful skill for a child from around age 6 up. Girls and boys alike enjoy the challenge and satisfaction achieved in the pursuit of knitting a simple square trivet, perhaps the more ambitious child will continue of the making a practical beanie and/or scarf.
Knitting engages patience, mathematics, colour choosing, problem solving, goal setting, perseverance, observation of progress, and delight in success!
Our wooden needles are made from local Tas Oak, a hard wood, regularly made for us in small batches over the past 15 years by a local Men’s shed. The needles are finely sanded and oiled, with perfect points that are neither too sharp or too blunt for a beginner. The handmade needles have a shorter length, suited to beginner projects, this size is easy to manoeuvre, and quickly achieves a feeling of great progress!
there are two widths:
10mm is ideal for a young beginner or an older more hesitant beginner with 16 ply wool.
8mm is suited to an older beginner for use with either 8ply, 12ply or 16ply.
* we also sell suitable wool in array of colours, a first recommended practice project is to aim for knitting a square of 15 - 20 stitches x 15-20 rows using our mini balls which encourage the feeling of achievement when knitting to the end of the littke ball to change colour
