What is Steiner?

Lyrebird is a curated selection of products inspired by Steiner education.

'STEINER PRODUCTS' are typically made from quality natural materials, are well made, are open ended in functional possibilities rather than presenting as prescribed play; products open the imagination allowing creative play, engaging a sense of wonder, developing enquiring minds though the 'head, heart and hands';  colour is either natural from or inspired by nature, or based on Goethes colour wheel; many products are handmade originals, or made in small batches rather than mass produced or computer generated. Many Steiner maker businesses are social enterprises, engaging people who experience disabilities or are disadvantaged to engage in meaningful quality work alongside experienced artisans.

'STEINER EDUCATION': also known as Waldorf education, is a holistic approach to learning developed by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century. It emphasizes nurturing each child’s intellectual, artistic, and practical abilities, aiming to develop well-rounded free thinking individuals. Steiner education encourages creative thinking, enquiring minds and self-expression through a curriculum that integrates academic subjects with arts, music, movement, and crafts. The teaching focuses on experiential learning to engage students deeply, while fostering a strong sense of community and social responsibility. The approach respects the child's developmental stages, tailoring the educational experience to support their growth in mind, body, and spirit. Steiner education is the largest non-denominational form of education throughout the world.
